The Face of Peterborough was a unique and exciting artist in residence project hosted by Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery in conjunction with Peterborough City Council and supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
Between 6th February and 25th April 2010 Christopher Wiles was Artist in Residence at the Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery as part of their Peterborough People exhibition. During his residency created a unique, hand-drawn portrait called the Face of Peterborough. The Face of Peterborough was created by taking 1600 photographs of the residents of the city which were merged together using a piece of software called Psychomorph, kindly supplied by the Face Research Laboratory - part of the psychology department at the University of Aberdeen. The resulting image, an 'average' of all the portraits included, was used to create the Face of Peterborough, a huge, painstakingly detailed, photorealist pen and ink portrait drawing in a studio within the gallery. Alongside the residency Christopher Wiles ran a series of arts workshops for local school groups.
Thank you to all the residents of Peterborough who have had their photographs taken for the project, we have managed to gather over 1600 photographs from all the events throughout December and January.
The Face of Peterborough was given to the city on Fri 27th May 2011 after a day of workshops in the city and a well attended lecture by the artist at the John Clare Theatre.
